Automobile Air Conditioning Evaporator Header Assembly Station

This station assembles four aluminum evaporator headers used in automotive heating / cooling systems by pressing and crimping two components together. The machine bends eight tabs located on each header plate over the rim of a tank to form an assembly while controlling the assembly height within a tight tolerance range. Pneumatic cylinders provide the force for the pressing operation through Allen Bradley SLC-500 PLC.

Parts are manually loaded / unloaded and dual start sensors and a light curtain are provided for operator safety. Sensors check for completion of the pressing operation and signal the operator if there is a fault. The machine was designed to maintain the required part production rate of the production line.


Fuel Injector Manifold Leak Tester

This tester, using shop air, checks for leaks in both the air and water passages in automobile fuel injector manifolds. The leak tester consisted of two independent stations, one for right-hand & the other for left hand cast aluminum manifolds. This test station became a component part of an existing production line.

This machine was a manual load and unload and utilized a Cosmo leak testing system with audible / visual alarms to indicate test failure modes. Schmiede developed special urethane sealing elements that enabled the individual testing of multiple chambers within each manifold. Sealing force was provided by pneumatic cylinders and special mechanisms. The machine utilized a Mitsubishi PLC directing the leak testing sequence. Operator safety is provided through dual start sensors and light curtain gate.
